Butler | Domestic Relations | Form DR610 | REGULAR PARENTING TIME Basic Principles: Birth to Three Years i. Particularly with very young children, the more frequently the non-residential parent sees the child(ren), the more appropriate it is to have longer periods of time with the non-residential parent.ii. If the non-residential parent has not had regular contact with the child, short periods of parenting time must precede extended periods. iii. With children over the age of 3 months, and particularly with children in the preschool years, more overnight time may be appropriate, subject to the temperament of the child and the circumstances of each family. iv. Parents shall adjust parenting time to allow for frequent contact for the non-residential parent to accommodate their work schedules. The non-residential parent shall have parenting time as follows: A.Birth to 3 months: Frequent short visits in the baby’s home, unless otherwise specified. If the residential parent is not working outside the home, daily from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm. If the residential parent is working outside the home, every other day from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Preschool age children can adapt to longer periods of separation from their principal caretakers than younger children can. ii. The needs of the 3 through 15 year old child with regard to school schedules, homework, and extra-curricular activities must be respected. iii. Adjusting to and moving back and forth between two households increases the complexity of life for a child in a divorce situation. It may, therefore, be necessary to simplify other aspects of a child’s life, e.g. by reducing the number of outside activities. The non-residential parent shall have parenting time as follows: D. 3 through 15 years: A rotating schedule as follows: Weeks 1 & 3-Tuesday 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm plus Friday evening at 6:00 pm to Monday morning before School or summer care Weeks 2 & 4-Thursday 6:00 pm to Friday morning before school or summer care Basic Principles: 16 to 18 Years i. Parents should respect an older teenager’s need to spend time with peers, work and participate in organized activities, and less time with each parent, particularly during weekends and summer holidays. ii. Quality of time is more important than a rigid schedule. Flexibility in scheduling is necessary. When possible, it is preferable to consider the teenager’s wishes as long as the parents agree. Clermont | Domestic Relations | Page 44 | WEEKLY SCHEDULE A. Birth to Three YearsVery young children benefit from having a “home base” with one parent, and frequent, but short (i.e. two or three hour periods), contact with the other parent. Although Parent 1 may feel that the schedule is imbalanced in favor of Parent 2, the purpose of this schedule is to ensure that the very young child has the home base, which is vital to his/her developmental needs. Parent 1 will have alternating weekly parenting time as follows:Week A: Tuesday and Thursday evening from 6 pm to 9 pm and from Saturday at noon to Sunday at noon.Week B: Tuesday and Thursday evening from 6 pm to 9 pm and Saturday from 9 am to noon. Age Three Years through Twelve YearsChildren in this age group often have extracurricular activities several nights each week. Both parents should continue to support their child/ren in these activities to the same extent if they had not terminated their marriage. Each parent must put aside any animosity he/she feels toward the other parent when the parents are attending their child/ren’s activities, for the child/ren’s benefit and to avoid embarrassing the child/ren. Neither parent, however, may use his/her authority to schedule extracurricular activities in a manner that defeats or seriously infringes on the other parent’s ability to spend time with the child/ren.Parent 1 will have parenting time alternating weekly as follows:Week A: Thursday afternoon, at 6 pm until Monday morning. Parent 1 is responsible for transporting school age child/ren to and from school on Friday and on Monday morning. If the child/ren does not have school on Friday morning, Parent 1 is responsible for making child care arrangements for the child/ren. If the child/ren does not have school on Monday morning, Parent 1 must return the child/ren to Parent 2 or the child care provider by Monday at 10 am. Parent 2 is responsible for making child care arrangements for the child/ren. Week B: Thursday afternoon at 6 pm until Friday morning. If school is in session, Parent 1 is responsible or taking school age children to school on Friday morning. If school is not in session on Friday, Parent 1 must return the child/ren to Parent 2 or the child care provider by Friday at 10 am. Age Thirteen Years and above Children in this age group tend to view their peer group as more important than their family ties. This does not mean that parents are insignificant or have no role to play with children of this age. Each parent must continue to support their child/ren’s relationship with both parents. Both parents should continue to support their child/ren in their activities to the same extent as if they had not terminated their marriage. Each parentmust put aside any animosity he/she feels toward the other parent when the parents are attending theirchild/ren’s activities, to avoid embarrassing the child/ren.Many children are driving by age 16; many children are also working part time jobs in addition to attending high school and participating in extracurricular activities. Both parents have to be reasonable with their demands for their child/ren to spend time with the parents, especially during weekends and summer holidays. Quality of time is more important than a rigid schedule. Flexibility in scheduling is necessary. When possible, the parents should consider the older teenager’s wishes.Parent 1 will have parenting time every other weekend from Friday at 6 pm until Monday morning. If school is in session, Parent 1 is responsible for taking school age child/ren to school on Monday morning. If school is not in session, Parent 1 must return the child/ren to Parent 2 by Monday at 10 am.
